Combatting Aural Isolation during a Pandemic

Project 3 for Advanced Practicum in Sound Art (AUDI 415)

with
Professor David Worrall
Audio Arts and Acoustics Department, Columbia College Chicago

The Covid-19 pandemic saw many of us move our activities out of our normal work, recreation and living spaces, with many people living in more fear and more isolation, including acoustic isolation, from their surroundings and social connections than they have previously experienced. We may interact with each other over video conference and telephone calls, but these are not the same as isolated listening experiences. This project was to design an online continuous user-interactive experience that enhances the acoustic ambience for people isolated from each other and their normal social environments; an experience that users might customize to boost their productivity or otherwise enhance their wellbeing.
